deBAYte wins back-to-back state championships!

Debayte took a fabulous crew of 32 debayters to the Florida State Competition this past weekend. We are so excited to report that we won the overall State Championship, defended our state championship title in policy debate, and won state champion titles in extemporaneous speaking, impromptu, and informative speaking.


Specifically, the debate teams of Valentina Sarmiento (junior)/Josh Gavsie (sophomore) and Tyler Kotler/Lance Kotler (seniors) are co-champions in Policy debate for the 3rd year in a row. Noah Rabinovitch (junior) is the inaugural state champion in Informative Speaking (and 3rd in Original Oratory), Jose Quinones (junior) is the Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking State Champion, Andres Baute (sophomore) is the State Champion in Impromptu Speaking, and Gus Duran (senior) is the state champion in International Extemporaneous Speaking.

The entire team contributed to our Overall Team championship with numerous other accolades. Please congratulate the following students as well …

Charlie Seldin (sophomore) placed 3rd in Lincoln Douglas Debate AND Top Speaker
Sid Kaul (senior)/Elijah Reisman (sophomore) placed 3rd in Policy Debate
Jenee Cidel (senior) placed 3rd in Oral Interpretation
Cory Wurtenberger (sophomore) placed 4th in Informative Speaking
Lau Rodriguez (junior) placed 4th in Program Oral Interpretation
Aitana Hidalgo (sophomore)/Lau Rodriguez (junior) placed 5th in Duo Interpretation
Alicia Marrero-Riera (sophomore) placed 5th in Program Oral Interpretation
Ambreen Imran (junior) placed 5th in Congressional Debate
Aileen Flores (sophomore) placed 6th in Program Oral Interpretation

The following people placed in the top 12 of their events: Ethan Silvey/Andrew Briceno (senior), Tristan Wertanzl (sophomore),Gus Lanz (sophomore), Blaise Ramirez (junior), Hunter Tomich (senior), Jonathan Lun (sophomore), and Maria Duran (sophomore).

We could not be prouder of Debayte this season, especially at State. A photo of the team is of course attached. Up next is the Novice State tournament at Cypress Bay in 41 days! Thank you for your support, leadership, and good vibes. Our team couldn’t exist without all of you. It certainly takes a village.
